PEN Kurd was founded in 1988 during the International PEN Conference in Cambridge, following a proposal by Kurdish writer Hüseyin Erdem. Since then, the centre has become a vital platform for Kurdish writers, poets, and translators.
Every three years PEN Kurd holds a congress, electing a new committee to lead its cultural and literary work. As part of PEN International, PEN Kurd promotes Kurdish literature worldwide and defends freedom of expression, particularly the right to write and publish in the Kurdish language.
Today, PEN Kurd stands as a bridge between Kurdish voices and the global literary community, supporting writers in exile, advocating for cultural rights, and ensuring that Kurdish stories are heard across the world.
